Queensland is a centre of excellence for science and technology and home to many world class research institutions and researchers.

Committed to nurturing the ‘super scientists’ of the future, Queensland Government schools prepare you to take advantage of new opportunities in an increasingly knowledge-based economy.

Download the STEM science flyer to read more about our commitment to science.

Biology

Biology is the study of life and living organisms. With a range of fascinating sub-disciplines, this subject covers everything from biochemistry to zoology, and is the foundation for a variety of exciting careers.

Mark from Korea talks about his experiences studying science at Helensvale State High School in the video below.

Chemistry

Why does food change when you cook it? How are medicines developed? What compounds could reverse the effects of environmental pollution? Chemistry answers these questions and millions more through the study of the properties and interactions of the substances and matter all around us.

If you dream of being a doctor, nurse, veterinarian, nutritionist or pharmacist then chemistry will already be on your study radar.

If a scientific career is not for you then consider studying chemistry to develop the advanced analytical skills you need to succeed in highly desirable careers.

Jihyun from South Korea thinks Queensland is a great state to study her favourite subject—chemistry. Watch the video below to hear what she has to say.

Physics

Often called the ‘fundamental science,’ physics is the study of matter, energy, space and time. In fact, the entire universe is built on principles revealed by the study of physics.

An understanding of physics opens the door to all scientific disciplines. Engineering study requires a sound knowledge of mathematics and physics—and sometimes chemistry and biology—depending on the branch of engineering you choose to specialise in.

Trinh from Vietnam has been learning physics since he was 7 years old. Watch the video below to find out why he chose to study at North Lakes State College.
