All Queensland Government schools have both male and female students, and students go to school during the day. In Australia, it is the law that any children old enough to go to school must go to school.
Children who are 4 to 5 years of age begin school in a Preparatory Year. It is important to know that international students applying for a student visa (subclass 500) must be at least 6 years old.
After Prep, children go to primary school for 6 more years and after that, they go to high school for 6 years. They graduate when they finish Year 12.
At high school, there are 4 years of junior high school (Years 7 to 10) and then 2 years of senior high school (Years 11 and 12). At the end of Year 12, most students will get their
Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and an
Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
After they complete high school, students may choose to study at university or a vocational education provider.
