​​​​​​Mackay North State High School has a proud tradition of educational excellence in the Mackay region. As a Band 11 school, we have an enrolment of over 1300 students. Our dedicated staff are committed to high quality teaching and learning across the school from Years 7 to 12.

At North we believe every student has the opportunity to succeed. We offer students a range of pathways as they progress from Junior Secondary to Senior Secondary, and we have high expectations of our students, whichever pathway they commit to follow.

Our school is located near the world-famous beachside community of Airlie Beach and the popular Whitsunday Islands.

Enjoy weekends with your homestay family discovering our tropical highland rainforest and more than

30 sandy beaches. See wallabies at sunrise on the beach and platypus in our rainforest rivers. Swim in

crystal clear rock pools and glide through the forest canopy on a flying fox cableway.

We have a reputation for academic excellence and outstanding achievement in music, performing

arts and sport. Our school is well resourced so you can choose from many subjects and extracurricular activities.

Homestay* enables EQI students to truly experience Australia's famous lifestyle.

By living with an Australian host family international students become part of the local community and have a fantastic opportunity to practise their English in a safe and caring home environment. International students often develop lasting friendships with their homestay families.

  • Students have their own bedroom with study facilities, three meals a day, and access to transport to and from school, and to school activities
  • Host families are carefully selected from within the school community and undergo a police check as required by Queensland law

  • Health and physical education facilities include: a 25-metre swimming pool, extensive playing fields, a gym and a climbing wall
  • Senior centre facilities include an auditorium and senior study room
  • Junior secondary precinct provides indoor and outdoor educational and recreational areas
  • Arts facilities include an art studio, performing arts area, music practice rooms and a dance floor
  • Vocational education facilities include a commercial kitchen and training restaurant, and engineering and building workshops

Extracurricular activities

  • The performing arts department sponsors many extracurricular activities for all students

  • The school’s signature musical ensemble is the marching band; the largest school marching band in Australia with over 140 members. This band has represented Australia at the Sydney and Beijing Olympics, the Shanghai Tourism Festival, Disneyland and the Los Angeles Independence Day Parade

Holiday adventure programs

EQI Holiday Adventure Programs are an exciting and safe way for International Students to travel and sightsee during school holidays.

There's an EQI adventure to suit every taste - from visiting city landmarks and riding camels on an unforgettable Australian 'outback' adventure, to exploring ancient rainforests and swimming with turtles off Queensland's pristine white sand beaches.

All EQI Holiday Adventures are fully guided and escorted by qualified Queensland Government teachers and staff to ensure student safety. These programs are open to international students enrolled in an EQI high school, and additional fees apply. To find out more visit the holiday programs page
