The 8 core learning areas of the Australia Curriculum that are studied in Queensland Government schools not only improve your learning and skills, they prepare you for future education and career options.

English

English is widely considered to be the standard language in many settings and careers, including computer coding, international business, and higher education. Living and studying in an English-speaking country such as Australia gives you the opportunity to practice using and speaking English every day.

Mathematics

Mathematics, or ‘maths’ for short, is a super useful subject that supports the sciences, music and art. Maths is also an important part of a long list of careers including business, economics, software development, statistics, retail, accounting and many others.

Science

Queensland is a centre of excellence for science. We are home to many world-class research institutions and researchers. We are committed to nurturing the ‘super scientists’ of the future, so our Queensland Government schools prepare you to take advantage of new opportunities in an increasingly knowledge-based economy.

Humanities and social sciences

Studying humanities and social sciences is learning about the way people interact with each other in different cultures and environments. It’s learning about the world we live in through subjects like history, politics and economics—all important things if you want to be amongst the health professionals, politicians and business leaders of the future.

Health and Physical Education

Health and Physical Education is sometimes called HPE. It’s a mixture of classroom learning and getting out and being active, which is great in the warm Queensland climate. Classes might include learning about healthy concepts or practising different sports and movement activities.

Technologies

Design and technology skills are needed to create new products, materials and buildings, to inform and communicate, and to enhance the use of virtual reality modelling, particularly in research and teaching applications.

The Arts

From painting to pottery and violin to musical theatre, there is so much to do in the arts. If you want a creative career, you can certainly make a good start by studying arts subjects at school. Arts subjects also help build your confidence and teach you to problem-solve creatively—great skills for any career.

Languages

Learning different languages is such a useful skill. Not only does it help you communicate with people in different countries, it helps you understand people better and can strengthen your literacy skills. Queensland is a very multicultural place and there are many different languages you can learn in our schools.
