About the central coast

  • The Central Queensland coast is a region of contrasts, with the world-famous Great Barrier Reef, beachside resorts, national parks, historic towns and cultural sites.
  • The region’s schools offer a choice of high school programs that benefit from regional strengths in marine industries, mining and related services, industry processing, engineering, agriculture and environmental science.
  • High school students benefit from learning pathways with TAFE Queensland North institutes, vocational study providers and universities, including James Cook University and Central Queensland University (CQU), Australia’s largest regional university.
  • In 2015, research at CQU achieved ‘Excellence in research for Australia’ ratings of ‘at,’ ‘above’ or ‘well above’ world standard in many areas, including maths, agriculture and VET science and artificial intelligence.
  • The Central Queensland coast has access to domestic airports at Mackay, and Rockhampton.
