The Department of Education International (DEi) assists families who have a temporary resident visa to enrol in a Queensland Government school.
Some primary and secondary schools have additional requirements to enrol, such as living in the nominated zone near the school – known as the catchment area. Each school has an
Enrolment Management Plan.
Make sure the details of any Enrolment Management Plan are checked before making any accommodation decisions.

English as an Additional Language (EAL/D) support
- Dependent children cannot enrol at designated migrant reception centres unless referred by a local school.
- Access to in-school or in-class support from EAL/D staff is determined by the school. If EAL/D support is required, then the school will plan to provide this support, which is included in the tuition fee.
- Homestay accommodation is not available to students with a Tourist Visa.
- All students with a dependant/bridging visa must live with their parent or legal custodian and be under their care while they are enrolled in a Queensland Government school.
Validation of school reports
When a student completes their studies in a Queensland Government school, before they return home they can request that their school reports be validated by DEi. Please refer to the
Recognition of Queensland school reports fact sheet.
