Mailyn: Hi! Welcome to Redlynch State College I'm Mailyn, I'm one of the vice captains, this is Renee and Massimo they're our Captains and my fellow Vice Captain, Camdyn. Thanks guys see you later. I wanted to show you what a day in the life of an international student would be like at Redlynch (State College) if you're happy to hang out with me, let's get to it! The first thing you need to know about our school is even though there are a lot of fun subjects, we still care a lot about our core subjects, this is our STEM subjects; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This is very important to us because this is where the jobs of the future will be. And one thing you won't need to worry about when you come here is your grades suffering. Our STEM subjects often take us outside the classroom into nature as a part of our studies. What I love is Marine Science which is a part of Biology. We get to go to the Great Barrier Reef and study first hand the corals and Marine creatures that live on the reef. There's not too many schools in the world where you can go do that. We love science so much that we actually have a Science Excellence program that offers our best science students the chance to extend and enhance their skills and knowledge within and beyond the science curriculum. Student #1: I saw a few turtles, a shark and lots of fish Student #2: We saw lots of turtles Student #3: I saw an octopus Student #4: I saw a white tip reef shark Student #5: I saw a pretty big parrot fish and an absolute trout of a thing Mailyn: Our Executive Principal, Mr Mike Hansen, is very proud of what our school has to offer. Mr Hansen: Welcome to Redlynch State College. At Redlynch State College we capture students from prep through to grade 12. We have spent many years here at the college ensuring that we have a very safe and supportive environment for all of our students and staff at the school so I very much look forward to being able to welcome International students to our wonderful school environment once again. At Redlynch State College we set high expectations for academic excellence for all of our students and we also offer a rich excellence program and lots of interesting electives such as the Arts including visual arts, music and drama. We've got Live Production, coding and robotics, engineering and construction and many others, so I really look forward to meeting you should you choose to enrol at our beautiful college. Mailyn: So next I have my English support class, this is where I work with an English specialist teacher who helps me with my assessments and other classwork as well as my study plans we do this in the international lounge, this is where we can hang out and relax and meet with our teachers when we need to. Oh great, the international team is here. This is Mrs Glover she's our Deputy Principal as well as our International Manager. Mrs Glover would you mind telling us a little bit about the international program? Mrs Glover: Hi Mailyn, here at Redlynch State College we do have a really great support team, we have a Homestay coordinator Mrs Marias, we have Mr Smith, our International Student Program Coordinator and we have Mr Joe Clark our English support teacher. Mr Smith: Our job as a team at Redlynch State College is to support our international student family this means helping and guiding them at school but also making sure their home and social life is comfortable safe and fun as an international school we also have three languages on offer - French, Spanish and Japanese. Mailyn: I want to show you something really amazing come with me. This is our performance Auditorium this is where most of our R.A.C.E students spend most of their time, isn't it fantastic! There are five different Redlynch Arts courses of Excellence on offer and one that touches all of them is one that only few schools in Australia offer - the Certificate 3 in Live Production and Services. Not everyone wants to be on stage, and this course is designed for those who want to work behind the scenes and understand sound, lighting, recording and event production. It's an industry recognised course with real world opportunities that could lead to University. Another Redlynch Arts Course of Excellence is Dance. Students with exceptional talent in dance are offered a chance to rapidly accelerate their skills and dance as performance art. Careers as dancers, choreographers and teachers are the real world outcomes. Performances by the students are highlights of the school year. Drama is another Course of excellence at Redlynch. We have expert drama teachers who have degrees in the Arts and professional experience to impart to our dedicated drama students there are opportunities to perform as well as camps and excursions to theaters and even a chance for an in-State tour. The Redlynch Arts Course of Excellence in music is highly regarded and gives talented students the chance to connect with real and viable Pathways to the music industry professionals, locally and nationally the course is taught by expert teachers who have specific professional music industry experience as well as a degree in music. The 7 to 10 R.A.C.E Visual Art course is a practical after-school Excellence program designed to extend art making and visual communication skills. 7 to 10 R.A.C.E Visual Art provides students with real and viable pathways, connecting students to the creative arts industry locally, nationally and internationally. Are you exhausted yet? Well don't be, we still have a lot of interesting things here at Redlynch. I'd like to talk to you about a few of our specialist programs. Come on in to meet a few of my friends. Hi guys, hi Jade. Now Nick, I hear your in the rugby league program would you like to tell me a bit about that? Nick: Well the rugby league program is a subject that students can select at Redlynch State College and in the class you learn and develop your skills in rugby league there's a school team called the RSC Dragons and every term you'll go and verse other schools across Cairns in rugby league. Mailyn: Thank you very much Nick. Now Jade, after Recreation, tell me a bit about that. Jade: Yes, so we do heaps of mountain biking and hiking around tracks around Cairns and Queensland. We did the highest mountain, Mount Bartle Frere last year. It's a really fun, close-knit group of people, about 20 in the past, it's really good. Mailyn: That sounds really exciting! Speaking of exciting stuff, we also do white water rafting and swift water rescue. Thank you so much guys. Of course we have plenty of students who know what they want to do after school they want to work towards this while they're here. For these students the school has what we call alternative courses which are vocationally based and they really have to be seen to be believed! Miss Beutel: So we've got amazing kitchen facilities. We're teaching them how to do the basic skills in food preparation as well as service of customers, what we call front and back of house and they come out with a certificate 2 in hospitality and that sets them up for working in a cafe or a restaurant at an entry level position. Mr Neville: We have a range of amazing technology in this classroom, or Design Studio as I like to call it. We have laser cutters, 3D Printers and CNC machines and we try to make a whole range of projects looking at solving some of the complex problems that today's students are going to face both today as well as into the future. Mailyn: As you can see Redlynch State College is quite a large school and we have just about everything you can imagine available to our students. Now we started off this tour with science and now we're going to go see our new Science and Innovation Centre. How did you enjoy your day in a life as an international student at Redlynch State College? it's a lot to take in but when you come here you get to choose which courses that suit you and there's plenty to choose from.
