Title: Why should international students study at Aspley State High School? Before I came to Aspley I was so nervous, especially coming from a different nationality. English is a Second Language. I found Aspley High really good and they've welcomed me like part of a community. Now I am doing really well academically, more than I expected. One of the things that we hold on really closely to here at Aspley High is the idea of growth mindset thinking and it's all about empowering young people to take control of their learning and to understand that they don't have to be tomorrow what they are today. And it's really about the long game for them, it's about making sure that they are actually able to dig deep with that - when they are 21 at university; when they are 30 setting up their own business - they can actually influence who they are. Going to uni, it's definitely helped a lot with the growth mindset because, there's just a lot of scenarios, even working as a mathematician or an engineer. You'll definitely have to push through the problem and not give up by the way. Once I came to Aspley everything kind of changed for me. I think the environment created a drive for me to succeed. The teachers have always encouraged me to do better and have shown me that I can go beyond my limits. Teachers understand the students and just know which gaps need filling in their learning. They are enthusiastic about their work; they enjoy teaching and they know the subject really well. We really love our school environment, we're lucky we've got the most beautiful creek that runs around the back of our school in a really lovely large campus. I guess that's a physical part. It's the other part, the social fabric of our school community, and that is what I'm most proud of. We've got a really good sense of belonging, always being willing to learn new things, try new things and learn from failure; it’s all about setting people up for success. Two years ago, I didn't even know what English means. There were teachers coming to me and saying we can help you, and they were so supportive and I like that. Now, two years later, I actually enjoy school so much. I have friends that support me too and I don't feel lonely. No matter what type of person you are, no matter what you want to do - maybe you want to be a mathematician, scientist, soccer player, musician - the school has everything. It's really set me up for my success at university. All the valuable lessons that I keep today, I slowly developed as I went through Aspley High.
