2016 EQI Agent Familiarisation Tour
Thank you to the 45 agents who joined us for the EQI Agent Familiarisation Tour in late May. We’ve received excellent feedback about the event, which included school visits, a mini fair, agents’ workshop and networking opportunities. Everyone was delighted to see what Queensland Government schools have to offer, and meet the teachers, staff and students who contribute to creating such positive and memorable international student experiences.
Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF)
We recently wrote to you regarding changes to student visa applications. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) implemented a simplified student visa framework (SSVF) that came into effect on 1 July 2016. SSVF is designed to make the process of applying for a student visa simpler through a streamlined process that maintains immigration integrity but reduces red tape.
International Baccalaureate accreditation for Cleveland District State High School: enrolments open for 2017
Congratulations to Cleveland District State High School on becoming an authorised World School for the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Cleveland District SHS is a well-established, co-educational school on Brisbane’s bayside and has been a member of the Council of International Schools for 10 years.
Accreditation from the International Baccalaureate Organisation requires schools to follow a rigorous, internationally benchmarked process to ensure curriculum quality. The school offers a wide range of excellence programs and has particularly impressive results in creative arts and sports. For the past ten years, the school has achieved Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) results above the State average, and the IBDP will provide students with another pathway to university on completion of Year 12.
Cleveland District SHS values intercultural understanding to broaden the experience and perspectives of students. International thinking is reflected in the school’s philosophy and promoted across the school community.
The school will welcome its first Year 11 IBDP intake at the start of the 2017 school year. Prospective students can apply during Semester 2, 2016. A Year 10 IBDP Preparation will also begin in 2017 for current Year 9 students. Applications will be open throughout Semester 2.

Chilean government visits Queensland for VET best practice
In May, a Chilean government delegation led by Vice Minister for Education, Valentina Quiroga, visited Brisbane to learn how vocational education and training (VET) is successfully integrated into the curriculum by Queensland government schools.
The group met with Mitchelton State High School Principal John Searle, Mitchell Fallon, Head of Department (VET), and Judy Martin, International Student Coordinator, before viewing the school’s state-of-the-art hospitality training facility and Brisbane North West Trade Training Centre. The centre provides innovative, industry-standard training to high school students in the areas of engineering, electro-technology and renewable energy.
To mark the occasion, Education Queensland International (EQI) announced it will offer a $5,000 part scholarship to a Chilean high school student to give them the opportunity to study and experience VET at Mitchelton SHS in 2017.
We are currently working on an innovative electronic magazine (eMag) to highlight Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs in EQI schools. The interactive STEM eMag will feature pop up videos, career pathways, infographics, stories and other materials to engage prospective students. STEM is a major focus for Queensland Government schools, so we’ve planned four editions to highlight different areas of STEM study and careers.
