Message from the Executive Director,
Department of Education International

Dear partner agents

You may be aware there are a number of bushfires in Australia at present.
The affected areas that have gained much international media attention are more than 1000 kms from Brisbane (a 12-hour drive) and there is little risk of these bushfires having an impact in Queensland.
Unlike Australia’s southern states currently impacted by these bushfires, this time of year is Queensland’s ‘wet season’ with seasonal rain throughout January and February.
Please be assured that EQI through the Department of Education follows the advice of emergency services.
In the event of a bushfire or any other emergency, EQI will always act in the interests of the safety and protection of our international students, staff and their families.
We continue to monitor any situation that could potentially affect Queensland communities and will work with the local emergency services if there are actions that are required.
Up to date information regarding the location and status of bushfires in Queensland is available from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) website.
Our number one priority is always the safety of staff, international students and their families.
Our freecall 1800 QSTUDY (1800 778 839) International Student Hotline and incident management service is always available if required.
EQI will continue to keep our partner agents and families informed on any further developments if necessary.
Please be confident that EQI and the schools are closely monitoring any changes to the situation to ensure the safety of your students.
Kind regards

Stephen Biggs
