Toson: This is the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) in Brisbane, Australia. My name is Toson and I'm an international student here in year 11 and right now I'm studying the physics of momentum. This is an amazing school I think the biggest part that differentiates the school is the teachers. They're extremely experienced and they know how to morph the learning that we do into something fun and enjoyable and it's really engaging. Jane Manwaring: QASMT is a great fit for our international students for a number of reasons it's absolutely amazing, the caliber of teachers that we have. We have teachers on staff that have their doctorates. QASMT has been, for the last few years, the highest performing school in the state academically. The facilities here are probably the best I've ever seen in any high school setting that I've been in and I'm certainly no science teacher but I know in the labs that they have amazing equipment that sometimes even the universities may not have. We study the International Baccalaureate a course that is studied around the world - it's globally recognized and so it helps with transitions into universities. It is a real door opener - it is a real opportunity for students to be able to do their study here, experience life here in Australia, but then take it around the world if they want to. Toson: Doing the International Baccalaureate is extremely useful to me because I plan to go to university abroad, possibly in America, where some of my family lives. I'm studying Sports Exercise, Health Science and Physics at a higher level my main dream is to become a physiotherapist but I want to incorporate aspects of physics with my sports background. Even though the school is very focused on STEM, we all have to do a mandatory language and I've actually really enjoyed learning German. [Speaks German] Jane Manwaring: We are a highly diverse Academy with over 40 different nationalities, I think we have at the moment listed, that helps our international students feel a part of something and a part of the community very quickly. Toson: When I first came to the school I was really surprised at how diverse it is, there are people from all over the world I have so many friends with like-minded abilities and hobbies. Luna: I'm Luna from Korea and I'm Mathematics Captain here at Academy but I love playing music. [Plays music]. I think it's a great idea to come to QASMT because not only that it focuses on high achievements in academics it also incorporates other aspects such as sports and music or even robotics or other science related club activities. Jane Manwaring: We are so much more than a school of excellence in Science, Mathematics and Technology, we also offer a broad co-curricular program here at the moment we have over 50 different programs and everything here is set up so that the students can excel to the very best of their potential. When we do our tours the one thing that most of our parents and prospective students will notice is R2D2. Luna: Astronomy Club is a quite unique club, we gather around in the courtyard and we start by watching movies related to astronomy, like such as Star Wars! What I love about the school campus is that, unlike back in Korea where I'm from, the school is divided into multiple buildings so it feels more open. Jane Manwaring: And the campus is beautiful, it is completely surrounded by bushland, there is that sense of calmness and nature and beauty in amongst all of the academic rigor. We like to say here at QASMT that students find their like-minded people that have a desire to study, a desire to ask questions so I think international students coming here, that they also have that desire but also really value study and academics and want to be enriched that's why I think that they would like to come to QASMT, I think that's what is the draw card Luna: It's very easy to fit in or adapt to the school culture I can see myself more of an independent learner and more confident about what I'm doing. Toson: The school has definitely made me very well-rounded it's made me able to express who I really am.
