David: Hello my name is David and I am currently a Year 12 student at Indooroopilly State High School. I've been here for four years and I started studying here in Year 8. Lukas Mackenzie (Teacher at Indooroopilly State High School: When David first started at Indooroopilly State High School he was in the High School Preparation program. It was quickly discovered that he didn't need as much English language support and he exited to mainstream schooling. For Years 7, 8 and 9 he had EALD (English as a Second Language/Dialect) classes in addition to standard English classes, and then from Year 11 to 12 he was in the standard English class. David: Kim, why did you support me to come to study in Australia? Kim - (David's sister): Well, we were supposed to send you to Australia when you finished high school but that did not happen. So, you were supposed to finish in Cambodia at an age, like you know, around Year 12 to come here to do your university degree here but you insisted to mum and dad. So, we have all agreed to send you here at the age of 12 so you could come here to do your high school at Indooroopilly for your Year 8. The reason that we supported you is because we think it's going to give you a lot of experience. Also, you are going to gain so much in broadening your world views; academically; (by) experiencing a different culture; your self-confidence; independence; and the most important thing - that it will benefit your future career as well. David: Have you heard any feedback from mum and dad about me studying in Australia? Kim: Mum and dad are very proud of you for what you have accomplished and achieved so far in your studies in Australia. David: Do you think there have been any positive changes in me over the last four years? Kim: Yes, you have grown so much. You have grown so much, and especially in your self-confidence and independence; but you know, I still have to wake you up every day! David: Yes, I am working on that! Studying in Queensland is one of the better decisions I have made because our classroom environment is very friendly and it's a very open learning environment. So, my final advice to all Cambodian students who wish to come to study in Queensland is please don't be afraid to take all the possibilities that you can and I invite you all to come to study in Queensland.
